Spring break is upon us and summer time is fast approaching! Don’t let bed bugs be a buzz kill (say that 5 times fast) during your hard-earned vacation away. A few precautions will help you avoid creepy crawly nightmares. Shake off the heebie jeebies you just got from thinking about that and read on.
Don’t Relax Just Yet
Immediately after entering the room, leave your luggage on the bathroom floor or bathtub where bed bugs are less likely to be found.
Know the Enemy
You will be on the lookout for small black dots, red or dark brown stains (think the color of dried blood), eggs, and pale yellow “skins.” Sorry if you were in the middle of a snack, but hey, it’s swimsuit season. You’re welcome.
Use the flashlight on your phone to get closer and examine areas that bed bugs are commonly found. These include (but are not limited to):
Mattress/Bed Frame: Quickly scan over the comforter and sheets and then continue to pull back the covers until the mattress is exposed. Don’t forget to check the box springs.
Headboard: Peel back the headboard from the wall and flash the light all the way down the wall.
Nightstand: Check in the back of the drawers as well as tilt the nightstand back to check the wall
Upholstered Chairs / Sofas: Don’t forget to remove the cushions and check behind and under the furniture.
Luggage Stand: You’ll be using this during your stay so make sure it’s clean!
Back to Reality
Try not to get lazy about unpacking your luggage once you get back (understandably this is easier said than done). Immediately throw your clothes used on the trip into the washer and dryer, both on the hot setting. Wipe down the inside and outside of shoes with alcohol wipes. These few extra steps will help kill off any unannounced bed bugs.
